Should I See A Doctor For Stomach Flu?

in Flu

Fall is one of the prettiest times of year with its changing leaves and cooler temperatures, but it also brings with it seasonal illnesses including the stomach flu. Contrary to the name, the stomach flu has nothing to do with traditional influenza and affects the gastrointestinal system. Luckily the stomach flu can generally be self-treated, but it is important to know when to get a doctor involved.

The stomach flu often attacks suddenly and can be caused by contaminated food, water or having contact with another person with the stomach flu. Common symptoms include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain and fever. These symptoms can lead to dehydration pretty quickly if you aren't careful, especially for children and the elderly.

Since the stomach flu is a virus, antibiotics probably will not help and it is best to try and avoid anti-diarrhea medications as well. You should drink plenty of fluids to try and replace all the fluid you have lost from your symptoms. Drink water, juices and electrolyte replacement drinks like Gatorade to rehydrate you. Try eating bland foods to avoid further GI upset like toast, eggs, rice and bananas. Avoid caffeine, greasy or spicy foods and dairy products as they can worsen your symptoms.

While treating the stomach flu at home is recommended, it is important to know when to talk with your doctor. Call your doctor if you have not been able to keep down any fluids for more than 24 hours as you could be dehydrated. Symptoms of dehydration include weakness, fatigue, little urine output and thirst. These symptoms could be cause for concern and your doctor can help you to determine the best course of action.
