'Tis The Season ...

in Injuries Walk-In Urgent Care

Urgent care clinics and emergency rooms around the country are normally very busy around the holiday seasons. How can you avoid illness and injury during this busy time?

Take precautions while in crowded environments. Shopping, parties, travel, all expose us to other people’s germs. Wash your hands regularly, get the flu shot (it’s not too late), get plenty of sleep and try to eat a healthy diet. All of these steps can help you avoid the viruses that are lurking. And regardless of how busy you are, stop and take time to address symptoms that arise.

Limit alcohol consumption while at parties. Unfortunately the holidays are a time of excess and that can include alcoholic drinks. Drinking to excess can make you more likely to injure yourself in falls. And while this is true year round it is a good time to remember - don’t drink and drive. Call a cab or use a ride-sharing app, ask a friend or volunteer to be your group’s designated driver. There are many options to avoid getting behind the wheel of your care after drinking.

Exercise caution in the kitchen. Big holiday meals and baking days can lead to burn and knife injuries. Have your pot holders and trivets out and visible to remind you not to grab a hot pot or pan. Severe burns or cuts that don’t stop bleeding after applying pressure should be seen by a doctor to avoid infection. Also, make sure you don’t leave food out at an unsafe temperature while preparing and serving meals - and wash your hands regularly while cooking.

Ladders, and boxes, and chairs, oh, my! Be careful when dismantling your holiday decorations. Make sure you are standing on a safe, secure, ladder or step-stool. Don’t use items like chairs that are not intended for climbing. If possible, have someone else with you to aid in balance and to be there in case of a fall.

Battery check. Did you change the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors when the time changed? If not, now is the time. Make sure both types are in good working order.

If, despite your best efforts, you find yourself in need of medical attention this season remember that there is a TrustCare near you. We help you feel better faster!
