Your heart works in a fluid-filled protective sac called the Pericardium. Pericarditis is an inflammation of this sac. Acute Pericarditis means it happens suddenly but doesn't last long, while Chronic Pericarditis develops over time and may take longer to treat.

Both men and women may experience any of the following symptoms:

  • Sharp and stabbing chest pain that intensifies with coughing, swallowing, deep breathing or lying flat, and can be relieved by sitting up or leaning forward
  • Pain in the neck or left shoulder
  • Difficulty breathing when lying down
  • Irregular heartbeat (rapid rhythms or skips)
  • A dry cough
  • Anxiety or fatigue
  • Fever
